Andrea Peraner-Sweet is a 1976 graduate, cum laude , of Smith College and a 1987 graduate, magna cum laude, of Boston College Law School. In between, she received her Masters degree in Social Work from New York University (1980), and was a medical social worker at Newton-Wellesley Hospital from 1980 to 1984. She joined Fitch Law Partners LLP immediately after law school, and was elected to the partnership in 1995. Since 2004, Law & Politics has recognized Andrea as a Massachusetts Super Lawyer in its annual list published in Boston Magazine. Only 5% of the lawyers in Massachusetts are awarded that designation. Andrea has been regularly listed in the Best Lawyers in America®.
Andrea was recognized as among the “Top Women in the Law” by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly in 2015. Accordingly to the Lawyers Weekly website, “The Top Women of Law event celebrates outstanding achievements made by exceptional women. Andrea's civil litigation practice, covering a broad array of product liability, tort, employment, insurance, and general business litigation matters, takes her before the state and federal courts and before such administrative agencies as the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and the Massachusetts Division of Insurance. She has argued before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and the Massachusetts Appeals Court. She was a member of Planning Board of the Town of Westford from 1997-2010, serving as Chair from 1999-2002 and 2006-2008. She is currently a member of the Board of Selectmen.
She is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and before the United States District Court for the Districts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. She is a member of the Boston, Massachusetts and Rhode Island Bar Associations.
Reported cases include FDIC v. Elio, 39 F.3d 1239 (1st Cir. 1994) (fraudulent conveyance, appointment of trustee and other preliminary relief) (with Jonathan W. Fitch); Maryland Casualty Company v. NSTAR Electric Company, 471 Mass. 416 (2015) (public utility’s liability for damages may be limited by a properly filed and approved tariff); Afarian v. Massachusetts Electric Company, 449 Mass. 257 (2007)(negligence and statute of repose issues); McBride v. Massachusetts Comm'n Against Discrimination, 677 F.Supp. 357 (D. Mass. 2009) (employment discrimination).
