James T. Phillips is a member of the Firm's litigation section. He has been practicing law in Dallas since 1995. His experience includes representing both plaintiffs and defendants in litigation, appellate and administrative matters involving insurance, construction defects and injuries, engineering errors, OSHA violations, environmental remediation, aviation, products liability, real estate disputes, landlord-tenant disputes and commercial disputes.

Prior to entering law school in 1992, Mr. Phillips spent four years as an aerospace structural engineer. After receiving his undergraduate degree in engineering from Southern Methodist University in 1988, Mr. Phillips was employed by Bell Helicopter Textron in Fort Worth, Texas, as a structural fatigue engineer. There he was responsible for analyzing the effects of fatigue stresses on helicopter rotor and airframe components, and determining safe retirement lives for those components. Mr. Phillips then joined The Boeing Company in Seattle, Washington, as a structural engineer in its damage tolerance group. There he worked on fatigue and structural analysis of Boeing's 747 and 767 product lines, as part of Boeing's "Aging Fleet" program, a program committed to the safe operation of jets during the later years of their design lives and beyond. Mr. Phillips' engineering experience is particularly valuable to his practice in the areas such as products liability, aviation, engineering and construction litigation.

In his free time, Mr. Phillips enjoys a variety of spectator sports, reading, golf, creative writing, snow skiing, cooking and enjoying the occasional bottle of good wine with his wife, Laura.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
