Bend Personal Injury Lawyer

I have worked representing people who have been injured by the actions of others nearly continuously since 1993. I have represented people against individuals, insurance companies and large multi-national corporations.

I was born in Juneau, Alaska, and raised in Anchorage, where I attended high school. Looking for something different, I fled the ice and attended Arizona State University, where I received my Bachelor of Science in 1990. I then enrolled in law school at the University of Washington in Seattle, where I met my wife on a blind date. After graduation in 1993, I returned to Juneau and took my first job working as an insurance defense lawyer for about a year. I then worked for a labor law firm in Seattle while getting my Washington bar license, and then moved back up to Anchorage and went to work for a law firm doing plaintiff's personal injury.

Over the next 12 years, I worked on a great variety of cases on behalf of people who had been harmed by individuals or companies. I worked for two small fish processing companies in the Exxon Valdez oil spill litigation. I helped to represent a young girl who was paralyzed by a defective seatbelt. I worked on plane crash cases, and gun defect cases, as well as automobile accident cases.

In late 2007, I vacationed at Black Butte Ranch with my wife and two daughters, and extended family. We fell in love with Central Oregon, and made the decision to move to Bend. I was hired as an associate attorney by Bruce Brothers, then offered a partnership. Now that Bruce has taken a long overdue and well deserved retirement, I along with Jennifer Coughlin are proud to continue the tradition of providing excellent, creative and personal legal assistance to people who have been wronged through the negligence of people, insurance companies and corporations.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
