Laura Chiyono Rosenthal is a certified specialist in workers' compensation law and a shareholder in Meechan, Rosenthal & Karpilow, PC. She's practiced law for almost a decade. Prior to practicing law, she worked for almost 30 years in the legal field as a paralegal, a law librarian, and a paralegal instructor.
Ms. Rosenthal's greatest influence was her mother, a teacher and a brilliant woman who empowered her to champion working people. Her grandparents were Japanese plantation workers in Hawaii, from whom she inherited a strong work ethic and dedication to family. Part of her practice is dedicated to representing and empowering women who endured sexual assault and harassment at work. Another cornerstone of her practice is representing first responders: police officers, firefighters, and health care workers. Ms. Rosenthal is an adjunct professor of law at Empire School of Law. She also serves as an arbitrator for SCBA's Fee Arbitration Panel and is a hearing officer for the City of Cotati, City of Sonoma, and the Town of Windsor.
When she is not practicing law, teaching, or volunteering, Ms. Rosenthal enjoys reading, yoga, cooking, hiking, spending time with her family, friends, her beloved French bulldog Koa Blue, and an unreasonably large shoe collection.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
