I am rating myself. 5 stars!! Your site shows no venue to dispute a review. To keep it simple I did a closing for a nice old lady. Unfortunately, she passed. After that, several people contacted me to send the 10K in prop tax escrow funds of that I was holding. I refused to release without a court order. She also told me several times that she will not give any sales proceeds to her children which I assumed they were the ones calling.

Mr. Cahan handled the sale of a building in chicago where he took money from an escrow account and refused to pay it back. After speaking to him, he wouldn't answer why he wouldn't refund the money. Then he demanded that we get an attorney to handle the issue. After then hiring an attorney, he refused to speak to the attorney claiming he had an attorney client agreement with another private individual that was a heir to the building that was sold. However, both the client in question, and the attorney representing him/her couldn't get him to both refund the money from escrow, and or explain why he is refusing to do so. After hiring a second attorney to deal with the issue, Mr. Cahan's reponse was that if we wanted him to refund the money that was owed, we should be "nice" to him or take him to court. So we are now in the process of taking him to court over funds that were supposed to he refunded from escrow. Even the buyer (and his attorney) of this property agreed the money should be refunded, but they didn't know why he was refusing.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
