Burlingame Family Law Lawyer

Lisa R. Murray received her license to practice law in California in 1987 and in Hawaii in 2001. Ms. Murray has practiced family law since 1989, assisting families through the difficult divorce process. Ms. Murray serves her community as a mediator, Collaborative Practice divorce lawyer, settlement counsel, court-appointed child advocate representing children in divorce cases, and Judge Pro Tempore. Ms. Murray also volunteers with various community-based organizations participating in programs which provide low cost legal assistance to individuals. Ms. Murray's focus on Divorce Mediation, Collaborative Practice Divorce, and settlement negotiation counsel was borne from her experience of the destructive manner in which litigation impacts the lives of parents and children.

Ms. Murray has served as co-chair of the Family Law Section of the San Mateo County Bar Association, and as co-chair of the Children's Issues Committee - Bay Area, a Subcommittee of the Family Law Section of the California State Bar. As a member of Collaborative Practice of San Mateo County, she has served as President, chair of the Public Education Committee and co-chair of the Membership Committee, as an active member of the training and membership committees, and as a trainer. Ms. Murray is also an active member of Collaborative Practice San Francisco, where she has served on the Board, as a member of the Divorce Options and Membership Committees, and as the liaison to the Northern California Public Education Committee of Collaborative Practice California. Ms. Murray has been a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals since 2004.

Ms. Murray has been named a Northern California Super Lawyer from 2006 through the present. In 2009 she was honored with a Eureka Award by Collaborative Practice California for her significant contributions and demonstration of abiding dedication to establishing and sustaining Collaborative Practice in California.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
