Pasco Plaintiff Medical Malpractice and Personal Injury Lawyer

Overview

Edward F. Shea, Jr. is a long-time resident of the Tri-Cities, having arrived here in the early '70s with his family from Boston, Massachusetts. Ed has been married 28 years to his wife, Tami, a Richland middle school teacher and Pasco native, and has two beautiful daughters, Chloe and Claire.

Ed was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1965 and arrived in the Tri-Cities in 1970 with his family as a result of a judicial clerkship that his father, Edward F. Shea, Sr., took with the Washington State Court of Appeals in Tacoma. Ed's parents traveled the state, found the Tri-Cities and thereafter called it "home."

Upon arriving in the Tri-Cities, Ed's father became an associate with the law firm of Peterson, Taylor & Day and practiced law for 25 years before being appointed to the federal bench as a U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Washington.

Ed and his family returned to the Tri-Cities in 1993 after attending the University of Washington and Gonzaga University School of Law. He joined his father's practice (Shea, Kuffel, Klashke & Shea) in 1993 and has been practicing law here ever since. After his father departed the practice, the firm partnered with another long time law firm in Pasco, McKinley & Hultgrenn. Both law firms can trace their roots back to the early 1900s.

Ed served as a board member on the Boys and Girls Club years ago and was elected to the Washington State Board of Governors in 2006. Through that commitment, Ed served in various capacities for the Washington State Bar Association as a BOG liaison to the Character and Fitness Board, Court Rules & Procedures Committee, and Rules of Professional Conduct Committee, and served as a board member on the Judicial Selection Coalition, Board of Governor's Discipline Committee, Strategic Planning Committee and the Insurance/Litigation Committee.

In 2005, Ed was selected to the list of Rising Stars in Washington Law & Politics magazine and was listed in the area of civil litigation where he continues to practice today. In addition, Ed was recognized as a SuperLawyer in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Ed has been involved in complex civil litigation, including a class action in Yakima County where he represented approximately 3,000 teachers in a dispute with their health insurance company. At present, Ed's practice is focused in the area of civil litigation where he represents people injured as a result of hospital and/or doctor negligence, people injured in motor vehicle accidents, dog bites, as well as other injuries caused by the negligence of another. He has also been involved in a variety of complex litigation, including construction, real estate and contract litigation. The rest of his practice involves representing people in divorces and in child custody matters.

Over the years, Ed has achieved excellent results for his clients and significant damage settlements and verdicts for those he represents in the area of medical malpractice and personal injury. Ed works with three assistants, Zulema Cornejo, Beth Washburn and Amanda Madsen, who are very professional and efficient and have been significant reasons for the success Ed has experienced in his practice.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
