Smith Law Firm, P.C. opened it's doors in June, 1871 when Massena Bullard was licensed to practice law in Montana Territory and opened his office on Last Chance Gulch. Bullard grubstaked many a miner in the Gulch and his name appears on many downtown abstracts of title. His handwritten License to Practice Law proudly hangs in the Firm's Helena Office today.

In 1892 J. Miller Smith Sr. joined Bullard in the law practice, having initially come to Montana as a U.S. Marshall to return a "road agent" to justice in the Midwest. When Bullard retired and returned to the East coast, Smith carried on the practice. Later, Smith was joined by his sons, David Smith, Paul W. Smith and J. Miller Smith. Chadwick H. Smith, J. Miller's grandson joined the Firm in the 1950's. R. J. "Jim" Sewell, Jr. joined Chad Smith in 1971. He acquired the Firm in 1992 upon Chad's retirement. Bruce M. Spencer joined Firm a short time later. Scott H. Clement is employed by the Firm as an associate.
