Hired Law firm 2021When my regular attorney was ill and unable to help me with a last minute court date. I called on Pete Gilbert from the Gilbert and Gilbert Law Firm in Mt. Vernon, WA whom I had retained in several prior occasions. He was unable to help me this time because of prior obligations. His sister attorney Jayne Gilbert of the Gilbert and Gilbert Law Firm in Mt. Vernon, WA took on the challenge of it not only being in Yakima County, but also on it being on very short notice. She initially advised me that she was only requesting an extension of time because of the short notice given to her. Her professionalism and her court presence allowed her to present to the judge the facts of the case in such a way that the judge agreed with Jayne and had our case dismissed. I am highly impressed and greatly appreciative of her professionalism and concern for the case. The legal assistant Llewella went above and beyond her normal duties and was very helpful in gathering the needed documents and court filings with short notice in order to get me well prepared for our day in court. I would not hesitate to retain Jayne's legal expertise in the future, if needed.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
