Randi Susan Klein opened up her law firm in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1991, shortly after she was admitted to the California Bar. She represented clients in criminal and civil matters throughout San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Jose counties. The civil portion of her practice included personal injury, landlord/tenant, chapter seven bankruptcies, family law and juvenile dependency. The main focus of her practice was on family law and dependency matters.

In May 1999, Ms. Klein relocated to Southern California, and moved her practice to downtown Los Angeles. Since that time she has been practicing family law. She also works for trial lawyers on a per diem basis, wherein she covers court appearances, depositions, bench trials and motions. Ms. Klein has covered family law and civil matters in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, and San Bernardino counties.

Family Law

The primary focus of Ms. Klein's family law practice is on matters involving children. Ms. Klein has an extensive background in juvenile dependency, which she acquired during her first eight years of practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her experience in juvenile dependency distinguishes her from other family law attorneys who represent parties involved in child custody disputes.

Dependency cases involve children who have been placed in the foster care system during a time when their parents are unable to care for them. Many of those cases involve situations where the parents are incarcerated or addicted to drugs and are going through rehabilitation. Accordingly, the decision to place these children with suitable relatives or foster care parents during this transitional period is crucial, and is made early on. Where these children are placed is often determinative of whether or not they will ultimately reunite with their biological parents, remain in the foster care system, or be adopted. Ms. Klein has represented parties from all perspective in the dependency system. She has represented parents who have been accused of abuse and neglect, foster-adopt parents, legal guardians, and children.

Due to her background in dependency matters, Ms. Klein is often appointed by local judges to represent children in family law matters. She also represents parents on a privately retained basis, not only in contested custody battles, but also in all other aspects of dissolution proceedings.

Court Appearances and Per Diem Work for Trial Lawyers

Ms. Klein also works on a per diem basis for trial lawyers. She covers court appearances, bench trials, motions, depositions and ADR proceedings. By hiring Ms. Klein, the attorneys for whom she appears are able to remain in their office, cultivate new business, and meet with clients. They also save the time and expense involved in commuting across town to appear in court on routine matters.

The advantage to hiring Ms. Klein is that the attorneys who use her services do not have to go through a brokerage firm. Hiring a contract attorney through one of these firms is a like rolling dice. You never know who is going to show up or what kind of impression they will leave on the court. Ms. Klein is located within walking distance of the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles, and appears in that court on a regular basis. Thus, she knows most of the local judges and their staff, and has a good working relationship with them. She also knows what many of the individual judges expect, and she prepares accordingly.

Law School Experience

While attending law school, Ms. Klein clerked for the California Supreme Court and the California Attorney Generals Office in San Francisco. Thus, in addition to her experience as a litigator, she also has honed writing skills.

Continuing Education

Ms. Klein regularly attends continuing educational courses through the Los Angeles County and Beverly Hills Bar Associations, as well as the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles (CAALA).

In addition, she regularly attends and participates in workshops and seminars put on by The Trail Advocacy Project (TAP) of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

Randi Klein wastes no time! She is quick, efficient and graceful at what she does. I am truly grateful for all her help in our guardianship/custody case. She is direct and very helpful, even going out of her way to accommodate her clients. I really appreciated the attention and care to detail she gave to our case. If you are in a situation, she is definitely reliable and does not take any of the run-around! If you can get her to represent you, please do so, she is great!

I was recently involved in a contentious divorce which involved substantiated incidents of Domestic Violence. Accordingly, I have civil and criminal retraining orders against my Ex. My children are listed in both orders as protected parties. The family law court appointed Randi Susan Klein as minors counsel to represent the best interest of my children. Ms. Klein did a phenomenal job and was a strong voice for my children.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I enjoyed representing your three children. The older ones were very articulate and clear about their needs and how they wanted the judge to rule on this matter. Therefore, they helped me do my job. The younger one is absolutely adorable. I am glad you all got the ultimate result that you had hoped for. I hope that you and the children keep in touch and keep me updated on your situation!

I have been involved in a contentious custody dispute with my daughters father. We were never married. My daughter is 8 years old now. Several years ago the court awarded sole legal and physical custody to me based upon substantiated findings of domestic violence. Recently, my daughters father filed a motion for change of custody. The court appointed Randi Susan Klein as minors counsel to represent the best interest of my daughter. Ms. Klein interviewed my daughter, myself and her father privately. She read through documents in the court file, as well as other pleadings my lawyer sent to her. When we arrived in court, I had no idea what her recommendation was going to be. Ms. Klein recommended in my favor. She explained to the Judge, step by step, why my daughter should remain in my custody. While she was talking, the judge was carefully listening to her. He was shaking his head in agreement. As a result of Ms. Klein's hard work and presentation, the judge dismissed the fathers motion. I was so relieved that I cried tears of joy. Ms. Klein was a very strong voice for my child and she was well prepared. I am so grateful that the court appointed her to be my daughters lawyer. I am truly grateful for you Ms.Randi , you are a heaven sent ! Your help means the world to me and also my daughter. We can live in peace now and forever more!

My daughter is involved in a contentious custody battle with her child's father. Her daughter, my grand-daughter, is 8 years old. There was a court hearing this morning. I went with my daughter to court this morning to support her. When my grand daughter was very young, her father beat my daughter and threatened to take my grand daughter away from her. My grand daughter witnessed the beatings. My grand daughter is still in therapy sorting out how this affected her. The father also prevented me from seeing my grand daughter until she was 9 months old. Eventually my daughter got civil and criminal restraining orders against the father. Now he is only allowed supervised visits. Recently the father filed a motion for change of custody. The court appointed Randi Susan Klein as minors counsel to represent my grand daughter. Today was the hearing for the court to rule on the father's motion. Ms. Klein was a very strong advocate for my grand daughter. She explained to the court, in a very logical and passionate way, why my granddaughter should remain in my daughter's custody. Neither my daughter nor myself knew, ahead of time, what Ms. Klein would be recommending to the court. She was eloquent. She understood both the legal and the emotional issues and explained how that impacted our family. I cried when I listed to her in court. The court dismissed the father's motion for a change of custody. I am very relieved and very grateful to Ms. Klein. Because of her hard work and commitment, my granddaughter will continue to be safe and to get the professional help that she needs. Ms. Klein was amazing & did a Great job, I Highly recommend her for anyone seeking Minors Counsel, she is the Best !!! Thank you??

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
