I grew up locally in Chisago City. I am a graduate of Chisago Lakes Senior High School. I graduated from Hamline School of Law in 1999 and obtained my first legal job as a law clerk for a judge in Hibbing. In 2000 I moved back to Chisago County and started my own practice.

I handle primarily criminal cases, both in adult and in juvenile court. I have taken on cases from traffic tickets all the way to murder and serious felony cases. I take a creative approach to each individual client and their legal situation. I listen to my clients and advise them on what to do to put themselves in the best position to obtain a favorable outcome. Minimizing a client’s exposure to jail or prison is always a top priority. Protecting an individual’s criminal and traffic record is also a top priority. Criminal convictions can have many collateral consequences, and can adversely affect employment opportunities, housing options, insurance rates and more.

Some cases can’t be solved with a plea bargain no matter how creative the plea negotiations are. Sometimes a plea to anything means the loss of a career or a ruined future. Sometimes a person is wrongfully accused, and is truly innocent. These cases need to be litigated. I have obtained countless dismissals in cases where I have challenged the validity of the government’s evidence or methods of gathering evidence.

I have tried countless cases both to judges and to juries with great results for my clients. I have handled more criminal cases and conducted more trials as a defense attorney in Chisago County since 2000 than any other defense attorney. I understand the local culture and the local prosecutors, judges and court staff. Knowing the different players makes a difference in planning the best strategy for the best outcome, whether it is to negotiate a favorable resolution or trial strategy.

I have handled cases throughout the metro counties, and in several rural counties as far away as Lake County in Grand Marias. The majority of my cases are in Chisago, Washington, Anoka, Ramsey, Hennepin, Isanti, Kanabec and Pine Counties. I have forged good working relationships with prosecutors, judges and other defense attorneys throughout the state. If you are facing criminal charges in Minnesota I can help to get you the best result possible.

If you are being investigated for a crime you should have legal representation immediately. Don’t let yourself be intimidated into answering questions by law enforcement without representation. Often a client has already incriminated themselves before they retain an attorney. Don’t let that happen to you. A good defense attorney hired during the investigation stage may more than pay for itself if it results in no criminal charges or reduced charges.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
