Brian is a small-business counselor, who serves entities and individuals in a variety of transactional and litigation matters. His varied experience has given him a comprehensive understanding of most legal issues a business could face. From a constitutional issue before a federal judge to arguing an insurance dispute before the Indiana Court of Appeals to trying a negligence lawsuit to a local jury, Brian has advocated for entities of all sizes on issues of varying complexity in court. Outside the courtroom, he has negotiated the sales of businesses, drafted prospectuses that were subject to review by state securities agencies around the country, and drafted simpler transactional documents like a non-compete, supply, lease, and purchase agreements.
Brian has also developed an expertise as a legal drafter. He has contributed multiple articles on legal writing to Res Gestae, Indiana's legal journal and is a regular member of Scribes, the American Society of Legal Writers. With fellow JO partner, Tom Vetne, Brian has redrafted the local rules governing practice in the Federal District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana to make them more clear, concise, and comprehensible to the law and legal reader alike.
Outside the office, Brian loves being a dad to his four children and finds his life (and his house) increasingly populated by dinosaurs, Transformers, Elephant and Piggie books, Legos, and trucks. Brian also serves the community as a board member for Girls on the Run Michiana, Inc. and the Public Education Foundation (where serves as the foundation's youngest president).

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
