Upon graduating from law school in 1984, Howard moved to the Mississippi Delta, where he practiced as a public defender until 1988. Howard returned to Minnesota to practice with legendary criminal defense lawyers Doug Thomson from 1988 to 1989 and Ron Meshbesher from 1989 to 2004.
