Jeff Crampton graduated in 1985 from Michigan State University's James Madison College with a degree in Justice, Morality, and Constitutional Democracy. After managing many successful political campaigns (and some not-so-successful), Jeff enrolled at Detroit College of Law (now Michigan State), where he graduated, summa cum laude. While graduating first in his class, Jeff served as Editor-in-chief of the Detroit College of Law Review.

Upon graduation, Jeff returned to his roots in Grand Rapids, accepting a position at Varnum as a litigator. As a partner, Jeff developed a diversified litigation practice, with specialties in representing parties involved in complex civil litigation and real estate disputes. Businesses enmeshed in disputes involving fraud or breaches of fiduciary duties by key employees found Jeff's counsel and advocacy particularly helpful.

Jeff’s counsel on cases involving dishonesty led him to develop a practice representing the other side – defending those accused of white-collar crimes.Lawyers from all over West Michigan put their key clients in Jeff's capable hands when they are accused of committing crimes. Jeff is respected as a practical, discrete, and aggressive advocate for individuals and companies accused of white-collar crimes, drunk driving, and sex offenses.

Jeff has become a recognized leader in Michigan on drunk driving cases involving breath and blood issues. He wrote the chapter on breath and blood testing in ICLE’s Michigan Drunk Driving Law and Practice, he has taught at numerous seminars, and he is a founding board member of the Michigan Association of OWI Attorneys (MIAOWIA).

Jeff maintains those specialties and he continues to expand his representation of property owners in condemnation actions. Through critical analysis and skillful negotiation, Jeff has been able to obtain compensation for property owners well in excess of the amounts originally offered by condemning agencies.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
