Overview

Allison Near joins Jacobs & Dow, LLC after several years at the Federal Public Defender's Office where she managed a high volume of federal criminal cases throughout Connecticut. Although Allison's primary focus over the past several years has been on criminal defense in both the state and federal courts, she also has considerable experience in civil litigation. Through different opportunities, she has handled complex business disputes, personal injury cases, housing matters, employment litigation, and general civil litigation. Allison was named a Rising Star by Connecticut Super Lawyers for the years 2012 to 2015, and she was named a Connecticut Super Lawyer in Criminal Defense in 2017 and 2019. In 2016, the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association awarded her the first Diane "Cookie" Polan Award, which is given to a rising female attorney fighting for civil rights.

Allison graduated with honors from Colgate University (B.A. 1997) and she completed her legal education at Northeastern University School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts (J.D. 2004). Following her graduation from law school, Allison worked as a law clerk for the Honorable Charles D. Susano, Jr. on the Tennessee Civil Court of Appeals.

In 2006, Allison relocated to Connecticut and has since engaged in a broad range of practice areas as a litigator. In addition to working at small firms focused on general civil litigation, she worked as a staff attorney at New Haven Legal Assistance, and from 2014 to 2018, she was a partner at the criminal defense firm of Sheehan, Reeve & Near, LLC. She has represented hundreds of defendants before the state and federal criminal courts of Connecticut, and has tried numerous felony trials to verdict, including felony assault and murder cases.

Allison is often called upon to teach continuing legal education classes on various topics in the field of criminal defense, and she has served as a guest lecturer at Quinnipiac University School of Law to discuss sentencing practices in state and federal court.

Allison also serves as the Associate Head of College for one of the residential colleges at Yale University. She resides in New Haven with her husband and two children.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
