Consulted Law firm 2019I was engaged by Mr. Swift as an Expert Witness for one of his clients. After providing my services, for his client, Mr. Swift failed to provide payment as initially agreed upon. Mr. Swift did not respond to my repeated communications, and he never provided any reason or rationale for his not providing paying for my services...he simply ignored me and my repeated efforts. This more than merely suggests a lack of ethics, which, among other attributes, is required to practice law effectively and successfully. When it comes to legal representation, an attorney's reputation is everything.

Hired Law firm 2019Once the payment was cleared he went on radio silence. The matter was very time sensitive and my daughter ended up having to do all the work he said he would do. I understand things take time and that things must be done in the proper order and correctly and that nothing should be rushed in a court case. He had stated that the job would be no more than 4 hours of work and he would get right on it since it was time sensitive. Three weeks later no letters were sent, no calls made, no report back to her on what he was supposed to do. Still radio silence, my daughter has sent multiple emails and phone calls to find out status. NOTHING!!!! Don't go with him, he will appear all gung ho to get the job done. You pay him and sign the contract and zip, zilch, nada.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
