Barrett Lazar, LLC, began in August 2000, founded by Virginia Barrett, Scott Lazar, and Paul Lincoln, with Michael Garrett joining our office as our Senior Associate. However, all of our founding attorneys had previously worked together under other professional auspices. Virginia, Paul and Scott worked at the Newark, New Jersey office of a national law firm headquartered in New York City. The current members of the firm, Scott Lazar and Michael Garrett, worked together for some time at a law firm in Parsippany, New Jersey. As a result of his exceptional work with the firm on behalf of carriers and insureds and due to his successful trial work, as of September 1, 2005, Michael was made Partner in the firm. Paul Lincoln left the firm in 2006 to work in house at a third-party claims administrator and in May of 2019, Virginia Barrett retired.

Our firm specializes in litigation, including all aspects of insurance defense, auto liability, premises liability, construction, employment law, product liability, first party property, subrogation and commercial litigation. Our practice encompasses the States of New Jersey and New York at both the state and federal levels.

We provide legal services in property and casualty areas of litigation, involving claims against municipalities; trucking entities; environmental lawsuits, including lead paint and asbestos litigation; and in numerous insurance coverage matters including excess and surplus lines. We also litigate the defense of employment law matters, including claims of violations of the Civil Rights Act, the Law Against Discrimination (LAD) and litigation alleging wrongful termination and sexual harassment.

The firm has been involved in several high exposure actions involving claims of adulterated food products in both the Federal and State Courts. We have worked closely with epidemiologists, vendors and manufacturers in defending these claims. These suits have included both E. coli 0157:H7 and listeriosis claims.

We offer more than 40 years of litigation and trial experience. Unlike other firms, we have a depth of actual trial experience. We have produced informative seminars for our clients, both on request and on a voluntary basis, and we have also participated as lecturers in continuing legal education seminars.
