Taking the right approach makes all the difference in the world.
After years of practicing exclusively family law, Barbara (Lunt) Ornelas and Shawn Smith, are familiar with how to approach your case. We have a sensible, diversified approach to cases. We bring to the table over 22 years experience of representing both men and women, so we are familiar with both the male and female perspectives. Our philosophy and the way we approach cases is to try very hard to reach agreements. The truth of the matter is that any time you put the decision in the hands of a third party (like a judge), you never know for sure what’s going to happen . . . so generally, it is best to reach a fair resolution of your issues. But if resolution of your family law dispute is not possible, we are ready, willing, and able to provide you with the most assertive representation possible. We pride myself on my detail-oriented trial preparation and professional representation of you.
We speak plain English.
We want you to understand the legal aspects of the divorce, custody or other situation you may find yourself in, so we speak plain English. If you can’t understand your attorney, what good is it? Also, it is important to us that you are not intimidated nor scared to talk. You need to be able to speak freely to whomever you choose to represent you. We are down-to-earth and approachable.
Honesty is the best policy!
We don’t pull any punches with you. We strongly believe that you benefit by knowing the truth and what to expect given your individual circumstances. We empower you by informing you of your options and helping you to make choices that are best for you and your family.
So what are your options now?
If you are in circumstances where you just need information, We are more than happy to talk to you on the telephone or to schedule you for an initial consultation. Our firm offers a wide range of services from simply document preparation on a pay-as-you-go basis to no-stone-unturned representation for large asset and complex cases. In addition, We are a trained Collaborative Family Lawyer as well as trained mediators. We have also developed a new approach to divorces know as “Cooperative Family Law.”
Choose the firm that cares . . .
There are two ways to handle family law cases: go through the motions, divide the property and the kids, and get the court order OR relieve your client of his or her stress, assist your client in caring for your client’s children and needs, help educate your client, assist him or her in making sound decisions about their options, empathize with his or her situation, be a strong advocate for your client, and make a positive impact in a difficult situation . . . by truly caring about him or her. We care about our clients, not just because we should . . . but because it’s who we are . . . Lunt, Smith & Associates, LLP.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
