Dr. Berkin completed the requirement for a Ph.D. degree in Synthetic Organic Chemistry under the supervision of Professor Walter A. Szarek at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. His research included the synthesis and evaluation of monosaccharides in biological systems.
Dr. Berkin joined the Laboratory of Developmental Molecular Immunity at the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. For two years, Dr. Berkin synthesized potential vaccine candidates for Neisseria Meningitidis, an organism known to cause Meningitis.
Dr. Berkin is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
