Ms. Garrett specializes in civil litigation. From 2010 to 2013, she worked with San Diego Fire Lawyers, a group of litigation attorneys who represented over 1,000 families and businesses who were victims of the 2007, Witch Creek, Guejito and Rice Canyon fires. She handled cases for fire victims in Rancho Bernardo, Ramona, Fallbrook, Rancho Santa Fe and Escondido ranging from single family residence occupants to multi million dollar business losses. Ms. Garrett met personally with each client many times over the course of their case to assist them in developing loss inventories, and valuations and rebuild assistance, providing much needed emotional support as well as legal support. As part of the San Diego Fire Lawyers team, Ms. Garrett successfully worked up dozens of case for successful mediations, including a multi-million dollar settlement on behalf of a couple who narrowly escaped death by spending the night submerged in their backyard swimming pool. She started her legal career representing insurance companies and their insureds on various matters but has represented for over a decade plaintiffs seeking compensation for losses, including her current position as a plaintiff’s lawyer with Banning LLP, where she has worked since 2013.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
