Kathleen saved my family. After hiring four lawyers to deal with an extremely complicated and volatile divorce and custody situation, Kathleen was the only one who got it done. Other attorneys - both hired and consulted - were content to tell me it wasn't their fault, it was the system. Kathleen wouldn't accept that and attacked the problem from multiple angles, adapting as things continued to change. She showed up to hearing with CASES of legal books flagged to present case law for anything the other side may have thrown at us. Her preparation was impeccable. Moreover, Kathleen is an intellectual, and she approached my case with a professionalism and legal sophistication that are unmatched. She under promised and over delivered. And because we are all living in reality, I think its important to add that her billing was absolutely fair, and I never had any quarrel with anything on invoices from her or her associates. You won't do better than Kathleen, I am certain. Caitlin was also brought into my case, and she was equally stellar, both as an attorney and as a human being. This firm gets my absolute highest recommendation.

I was a previous client of Matthew Skillern?s for my Divorce and I have to say, despite how challenging it was for me, Matthew and his team worked hard to give me peace of mind everyday. While I hope to never use the Skillern Firm again, I will hire them again if I need to.

The Skillern Law Firm was great to work with, at one of the toughest points in my life. They cared about me and my children and were paramount in me achieving the best result I could get based on the circumstances of the case. I will definitely be using them in the future for any family/custody issues.

The Skillern Firm was stellar in handling my modification! Their team cared about my family and I felt at ease. I wouldn?t trust anyone else. Hopefully I won?t need them again but should I, I know where I am going

Skillern Firm is the best of the best and I am incredibly grateful that they took my case, mid-divorce--from a distance of light years culturally and more than 250 miles geographically--to turn it around after a fiasco of a temporary orders hearing and a constantly escalating, moving target, high-conflict custody situation. The value for the cost is exceptional and they were considerate and purposeful with my fees, much moreso than my previous lawyer with a deceptively low retainer, with whom I was unexpectedly hemorrhaging money and legal grounds. Neither was the case with Skillern Firm, who knew what was on the line for me and my children--legally, emotionally, and financially--and they confidently, competently navigated me through murky waters during what the most confusing and most emotional time in my life. When I needed new representation, I made the decision that I would only hire the best, no matter the cost. I found them in Skillern Firm and was delighted at their ability to actually save me money with their efficient competence and absolute legal excellence. Believe the hype! Thank you so much to my outstanding team of Matt, Alex, Loren, and Pilar!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
