Hired Law firm 2021-2022My husband and I put Ms. Swanson on retainer for a child support and custody case. When he initially met with her for a consult she said she thought he had a good chance of getting what he was asking for. She filed the papers and the other party filed a rebuttal which claimed so many false accusations and was extremely offensive. I was emailed this with zero explanation and no phone call to follow up. I emailed her after calling and not getting a returned call and let her know that was very upsetting to read and I needed someone to explain certain things to me as she was my lawyer and I didn’t not feel she was representing me well. She filed a continuance once then we went to court via zoom once. The other parties lawyer simply wiped the floor with me while Ms Swanson did nothing to defend me. I was yelled at, badgered and accused and had to defense even though she was there. I ended up settling out of court for much less than what I asked because after the call Ms Swanson told me that the other parties lawyer was really good and at that point I had zero faith in her helping me. I had about a 30 minute meeting before that zoom call to go over things, this should have been done a week in advance. My wife provided about 10 pages with of pdfs explaining past instances and exactly what we wanted for custody so we never had to spend time talking about it everything was already in writing, she filed one continuance and we has one zoom meeting for about 1.5 hours that she didn’t do anything for and I ended up settling out of court. This costed me $3,654. I was robbed of good representation and money. I highly suggest finding a lawyer that communicates and is honest with what they are charging you for.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
