As an attorney and former human resources professional, Karen M. Selby was a self-proclaimed "lawyer living in an HR world." Karen has served as the regional manager for human resources for a major publicly traded utility where she directed four regional human resources offices with oversight responsibility for labor and employee relations matters, including internal investigations and union negotiations. Karen also worked as the director of labor and employee relations for the largest mental health hospital in the State of New Jersey, where she was responsible for the grievance and disciplinary process and represented the facility in administrative law hearings and arbitrations.

For the bulk of her career, Karen served as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Jersey. In this capacity, she represented the Governor's Office of Employee Relations in grievance arbitrations and Public Employment Relations Commission hearings. She also maintained a prominent appellate caseload representing such entities as the Department of Personnel and the Department of Labor.

Before joining the Attorney General's Office, Karen worked as a Staff Attorney for Camden Regional Legal Services, where she defended the homeless and fought for the rights of Camden's most vulnerable citizens in family court.

Karen received her Juris Doctorate from Howard University School of Law. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
