Joel D. Zelkowitz, Esq. represented me with my disability claim against an insurance company. He has a high level of professionalism and I am truly grateful for his help to get my disability claim payments reinstated. Saying thank you could never begin to be enough to say to Joel Zelkowitz and the staff for the diligent work and attention to detail that was done in handling my Appeal for my disability benefits from my former employers insurance company. Joel's understanding of my medical situation and his reassurance that everything would be ok, was very comforting and showed that he truly cares about his clients. If there was ever a person/firm that I would recommend, this would be it.

I have been working with this firm for almost 3 years and I am exceptionally pleased with them for the following reasons: 1) They have successfully advocated and represented me every step of the way 2) Explained the process clearly, identified risks and did not overpromise 3) Extremely knowledgable 4) Do not waste my time (and increase my bills). Calls and emails are short, direct and to the point; Sometimes, I also do some "self service" to help lower my bills and they are fine with that 5) Reachable and responsive 6) Professional, courteous and accommodating They were an excellent hire. I'm so glad they were recommended to me

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
