Overview

Meghan P. Johnson is a domestic relations and estate planning attorney with Harrington Brewster Mahoney Smits, P.C.

Meghan has been dedicated to representing domestic relations and estate planning clients even before she obtained her law degree. While in law school, Meghan gained experience during her clerkships at local estate planning and family law firms. Meghan utilizes her many skills to assist families and is a collaboratively trained attorney whose practice is focused on finding solutions for families. Meghan is a skilled litigator in the event that settlement is unsuccessful.

In addition to successfully representing clients with financial and parenting issues, Meghan is experienced in alternative dispute resolution, parenting coordination/decision-making, drafting marital and premarital agreements, cohabitation agreements and estate planning.

As a child of divorce, Meghan brings a unique perspective to family law cases. She has firsthand experience with most family law issues and understands the importance of remaining child focused and settling outside of the courtroom when possible. Meghan’s insightful and compassionate skills assist clients in achieving their desired outcomes.

Meghan is a true Midwesterner, born in Dayton, Ohio and raised in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. While she has had the opportunity to live in seven states across the country, Colorado is by far Meghan’s favorite. Meghan enjoys adventuring with her Australian Shepherd and skiing as often as possible. During her undergraduate studies, Meghan graduated summa cum laude with a major in philosophy and was a proud member of the Huskies’ varsity swim team.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
