A. Daniel Spencer - Salt Lake City, UT

15 W South TempleSuite 600 Salt Lake City, UT 84101

Updated: 06/04/2024

Dan has been practicing family law since 2013. In that time, he has helped clients through divorces, custody disputes, adoptions, alimony and child support cases, guardianships, and private child welfare cases. His practice ranges from collaborative law to high-conflict litigation and trial. His clients include parents, spouses, and even children as a private guardian ad litem.

In 2013, Dan co-founded the nonprofit Open Legal Services to provide access to the legal system for low-to middle income Utahns who would otherwise have nowhere else to turn for legal help.

Dan left the nonprofit sector in 2018 and practiced for four years under the eponymous Spencer Family Law before joining the law firm of Scalley Reading Bates Hansen & Rasmussen in 2022. When asked to describe his practice, he calls it "family law and family law-adjacent."

Dan is currently wrapping up his third and final year as the President of the Utah Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. During his tenure the organization has quadrupled in size and has been recognized by the international parent organization as the fastest growing chapter in the world.

Outside of his professional life, Dan spends time with his wife and their collective four children, two dogs, and six lizards.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
