Attorney Information

Overview

Shannon is a native South Dakotan who attended college at South Dakota State University and law school at the University of South Dakota. She graduated at the top of her class and was awarded the prestigious gavel award by a vote of the law school faculty.

She was also a member of the Sterling Honor Society. After graduating first in her law school class, Shannon had the distinct honor of clerking for Lawrence Piersol, United States District Court for the District of South Dakota. After her two-year federal clerkship, Shannon joined a preeminent litigation firm in Sioux Falls. She spent the next nineteen years developing her litigation skills and learning from some of the most successful and most experienced litigators in the Midwest.

Shannon quickly distinguished herself as a legal intellect and became the go-to lawyer for complex legal cases, earning her the nickname the Wizard among her former partners. She can break down complicated legal issues into succinct and simple concepts. Whether the case involves intricate trust litigation questions or the complexities of state and federal regulations regarding product liability or insurance law, Shannon can navigate the legal pitfalls for her clients with ease and expertise.

Shannon's legal acumen is only second to her compassion and commitment to her clients. Over the course of her career, Shannon has represented families that have lost loved ones, individuals that have experienced devastating injuries as a result of someone else's actions, and countless cases involving family disputes over trust and estate matters. All of these situations can be emotionally difficult and have the potential to become all-consuming for clients. Shannon understands the impact that these experiences have on the everyday life of her clients, and she works tirelessly to be their advocate while also supporting them and guiding them through the litigation process.

Clients appreciate Shannon's communication style. She is an active listener who devotes time to ensuring that clients understand their case and that she understands their objectives and goals in the litigation. She cultivates a partnership between the firm and the client that is particular to the needs and desires of each client. Some clients want a hands-off approach to their case, and Shannon will manage the litigation and only reach out to the client when necessary. Other clients want to be actively involved in each stage of their case and consulted on all litigation issues. Shannon prides herself on meeting each client's expectations and respecting their opinions about their case.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
