Overview

Laura M. Mickel focuses her practice on corporate and business transactions and commercial real estate, including drafting and negotiating contracts, purchase agreements, and leases and advising clients on business entity formation and structuring.

Prior to joining Hunter, Smith & Davis, Ms. Mickel practiced business transactional and commercial real estate law in Cary, North Carolina. Prior to attending law school, she worked for several years in publishing and finance.

While at UNC School of Law, Ms. Mickel worked for Senator Tamara Barringer at the North Carolina General Assembly, in the Appellate Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina, and for Barringer Sasser, LLP. While at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, she co-wrote two briefs filed with the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Ms. Mickel also served as the Director of the McIntyre-Whichard Legal Fellowship, the Coordinator of the Juvenile Parole Project, a member of the Pro Bono Board, and as a staff member of the North Carolina Journal of International Law. She spent her spring breaks volunteering at a veteran’s discharge upgrade clinic in Asheville. As the Service Director of the Christian Legal Society, she helped develop a pro bono project for refugees in conjunction with Apex Immigration Services, which earned the Robert E. Bryan Public Service Award from the Carolina Center for Public Service.

Ms. Mickel also teaches business law in the Master of Accounting online program at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. Outside work, she enjoys traveling with her husband, Zach, and cheering on the Tar Heels.
