Hired Law firm 2024-2025Frustrated by what I thought was excessive billing, dishonestly, and a lack of experience going to trial, I hired Caroline McClimon two years into my separation. My only regret is that I didn’t begin the process with Caroline as my legal counsel. Caroline has all the intangibles that a cursory google search indicates are critical for a good family law attorney: legal knowledge, strong communication skills, good organization, high empathy, strong ethics, etc. But what sets Caroline apart is that she also possesses the intangibles that the internet may not tell you are important in family law. This includes: a sterling reputation among judges and lawyers alike, experience in high conflict cases, prior (good) working relationships with family law experts, and the willingness and ability to bring a case to trial if necessary. I believe that had I hired Caroline at the beginning of my divorce, then I would have had the same result (majority of time w/ the kids, occupancy of the primary residence, etc.). However, the separation would have concluded a year or more sooner, and by extension, the separation would have been significantly less expensive and emotionally draining. I have nothing but positive things to say about Caroline, and I strongly recommend her.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
