Overview
Michael Canton graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999. Prior to attending law school, he worked as a financial analyst for a multimillion-dollar, real estate, development firm. Michael Canton's interest in Immigration and Nationality law began at a very early age; he is the son of a naturalized U.S. citizen mother. That early interest developed into a passion over the course of his advocating for hundreds of immigrants. He has extensive experience in removal proceedings, which he gained while heading the litigation department at his prior law firm. He has in-depth knowledge regarding all forms of relief from removal. In addition, he has practiced in the Immigration and Nationality law areas of adjustment of status, asylum, immigrant and nonimmigrant visa processing and naturalization. Mr. Canton has practiced in the Executive Office for Immigration Review, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and he is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Mr. Canton was selected as a 2011, 2012 and 2013 Texas Rising Star by Super Lawyers. He is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association previously serving as a liaison between the association, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Executive Office for Immigration Review.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
