Houston Family (divorce, child custody, adoption, parentage, child support) Lawyer

Overview

Gillian S. Richards has been licensed since November of 1992 by the Supreme Court of Texas to practice in all Texas Courts. Her focus is on achieving the client's individual goals. Each client receives personal attention and an opportunity to speak directly with the attorney about concerns and issues in the client's matter. The attorney brings the benefits of five years of practice as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Texas in two Divisions: The Consumer Protection Division, including in the Wills and Trusts Section and the Child Support Enforcement Division prior to the attorney's entry into private practice. After a period as an Associate Attorney at the firm of Peltier and Associates, P.C., the Attorney founded the Law Office of Gillian Richards in August of 1998, and it has been in operation since that time. Years of practice in Harris County and other Texas counties has meant that the attorney has gained a depth and breadth of knowledge that can only be achieved by experience. Currently, the firm concentrates on the following three general areas of practice: Family Law (divorce, child custody, parentage and identity issues, premarital and marital property agreements, child support issues, adoption, termination of parental rights, representations in Child Protective Services matters, modifications, clarifications and enforcements of prior orders, venue transfers, and interstate issues); Probate (including probate of wills, will contests, heirship in intestate estates, and administration); Wills and Estate Planning; and Civil Litigation in Consumer Law and Business Disputes. The law firm is in Houston Heights, convenient from I-45 North and from I-10 West, and only about 1.5 miles from the center of Houston. Practice includes Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria and Galveston counties, and extends to others such as Liberty County, Dallas County, Collin County and Travis County.

Gillian S. Richards was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in November of 1992. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from the Law Center of the University of Houston in May of 1992; prior to that, she earned a M.A. degree in German, with focus in Linguistics, from Rice University in Houston, Texas; and a B.A. degree from Reed College in Portland Oregon, including two exchange years studying at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich in Germany. Gillian S. Richards speaks German, Spanish and Portuguese.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
