    Hired Attorney Sammantha Rodriguez-Miller 2024-2026
I hired Ms. S. Rodriguez in 2024 to assist with a guardianship case and custody-related issues. My experience was frustrating and disappointing. Throughout our engagement, I constantly had to follow up because she rarely replied or proactively reached out—often for weeks at a time. Ms. Rodriguez charged a flat rate and two before mediation she asked for an additional retainer & mediation fee . I had discused our contract being a flat fee. She tried an attempted to get another retainer out of me and after her acknowledgment that I was right and . This was contrary to what Iwe agreed to, and I felt pressured because our mediation was two days away so i paid a mediation fee outside our agreement. During mediation, I felt completely unrepresented. She did not advocate for me effectively, and I do not believe crucial evidence I provided was used. I provided key domestic violence/assault-related records, including information I believed should have been presented and addressed. I also do not understand how I was persuaded to mediate and proceed to guardianship given that my ex-husband had multiple arrests for domestic violence/abuse and had violated a protective order. The outcome left me feeling like the full facts were not considered. In summary, I am extremely dissatisfied with Ms. Rodriguez’s performance. I feel taken advantage of because I needed an attorney who would represent me, use the evidence I provided, and advocate for my position—not leave me with delays, fee surprises, and weak advocacy during a critical stage. It was defently retaliation towards me for not paying another retainer fee. Disclaimer: Not legal advice—this is my personal experience and opinion. Don’t Let Abuse Hide in Court Paperwork!!!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
