    Hired Law firm 2016-2017
I hired Mr Sumney 5 years ago to help me determine the amount of my special needs trust as I was afraid my brothers, the trustees would let it run out without alerting me. Unfortunately 4 years ago in July my utilities were cut off and I was evicted. I was homeless and even lost my emotional support dog, Romeo. The reason I had a special needs trust was due to my depression and suicidal tendencies. I made mr Sumney aware of this. It was of no surprise I ended up in a medically induced coma as the result of a suicide attempt. My brother, Brandon told me that Mr Sumney should have alerted me about the trust finances before I was literally homeless. I have reached out to Mr Sumney but I assume his lack of response is due to the fact I have no money left This happened 4 years ago this month. It has taken me that long to get on my feet. I write this in the hopes that disabled individuals aren’t treated this way by Mr Sumney in the future.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
