Hired Law firm 2012-2024Here is my personal experienced working with this Law Firm, and this review reflects my family’s experience with Harris Law Firm LLC in Huntsville, Alabama, specifically with attorney Joan M. Harris and members of her team, including legal assistants Martha Rodríguez, Patricio, and Gaby, who were involved at different stages of our immigration process. Over several years, we relied on this firm to handle our immigration matters. Unfortunately, we encountered multiple issues throughout the process, including recurring errors in forms (incorrect personal information), incomplete filings submitted to USCIS, and what we believe were insufficient responses to a Request for Evidence (RFE). Although the RFE clearly outlined specific documentation requirements, not all requested items were included in the response, and the application was ultimately denied. With time, we came to understand that there were fundamental eligibility concerns under the applicable immigration law. However, before filing, we were not clearly advised in writing that there was a significant risk of denial based on those eligibility issues. Despite this, the applications were filed and substantial legal fees and government filing fees were paid. Communication during critical stages of the process was limited. We repeatedly sought clear explanations regarding eligibility, legal strategy, and risks, but did not receive detailed guidance that would have allowed us to make fully informed decisions. After the denial, we were advised to consider refiling, even though the underlying eligibility issue cited by USCIS had not changed. I am sharing this experience so that others will ask detailed questions in writing, request complete copies of all submissions, and consider obtaining a second opinion before proceeding with complex immigration matters.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
