Attorney Information
Overview
I grew up in Evergreen, Alabama. I graduated from Lyeffion High School, received a Bachelors of Science degree in comprehensive social studies for secondary education from Auburn University in Montgomery. I received my law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law. Between obtaining my undergraduate degree and my law degree, my wife and I started Essential Maintenance Services, Inc. providing maintenance and janitorial services to commercial and industrial customers, which my wife still owns and manages. I also taught school during this period of time. I grew up understanding the value of hard work and the necessity of growing a business by building relationships. I want each of my clients to consider me their family law attorney for the rest of their life. I want you to feel good about referring me to your friends or family. Therefore, I am committed to always providing the very best legal service possible for each and every client regardless of how big or small their legal issues may be.
My family and I moved to Loxley in 2004 where we built a home and I started my law office. We moved to Baldwin County to be near family and because of the great reputation that the public school system has. We have greatly enjoyed being a part of this community and look forward to spending the rest of our lives here.
I have remained a member of the Loxley Optimist Club ever since joining back in 2005. I have served various functions, including oratorical chair, vice president, and president of that club. All of our projects are designed to bring out the best in kids…..the Optimist motto is: “Bringing out the best in our youth, our communities, and ourselves.” I have served as Lt. Governor for the Alabama-Mississippi District of Optimist International on two separate occasions.
Continuing Legal Education
The law is a dynamic and continually changing field. It is important for attorneys to always be continuing their legal education so that they remain current in the areas of law that they practice. In addition to studying the statutes and cases pertaining to any matters that I am working on, I usually read several books a year about topics effecting my clients. I also regularly attend Continuing Legal Education classes.

Hired Attorney 2019-2020Joseph is an amazing attorney... I have been a client of his for over a year and a half in a high conflict custody case. I called him up after reading a review from a client where he took on multiple attorneys and still won the case. Working with him now...I can totally see him doing that. He has a way of blending professionalism, a positive attitude, and this authoritative presence that commands respect and seems to take charge of the courtroom. This unique combination of personality traits reflects in his ability to negotiate...and ,oh my, can he negotiate. I've never seen anything like it. If Joseph Shaw were an artist with as much skill as I've seen him practice law, most other lawyers around him would appear to be stuck on finger painting technique. What's crazy is I never felt like he had even missed a beat on my case, in all the cases he had, he was able to compartmentalize and remember everything about mine. He was also personal, not just a great lawyer, but a great man. There is no doubt he cares about me and my daughter. I ,as a father, now have custody of my daughter because of him..and I can't thank him enough. It was such a high conflict custody case, it took a lot out of me, but Joseph fought unbelievably hard. If family court is an immovable object, Joseph Shaw is the unstoppable force, I know now the worst mistake I could have made is NOT having him as my attorney. Thank you, Joey!

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
