Attorney Information

Overview

My family law practice includes all aspects of dissolution of marriage or divorce cases, such as child custody and support matters, spousal maintenance or alimony, division of assets and debts. In addition, I handle issues that parties need to resolve after their divorce, known as post-decree matters. Before people get married, I will help them with prenuptial or premarital agreements. I firmly believe that the vast majority of cases should end with a negotiated settlement, but I also regularly appear in court for hearings and trials when issues cannot be resolved by mutual agreement of the parties. I handle cases from the very beginning through the trial. In addition, I draft appellate briefs and argue cases before the Arizona Court of Appeals.

In representing clients, lawyers must learn more about them than just about anyone else the clients deal with. This is particularly true in family law cases. It is important that clients feel comfortable with their attorney. So, a little about me: originally from the Chicago area, I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During college, I decided to explore and expand beyond my Midwestern roots, spending summers working as an intern in Washington, D.C. and clerking for judges in Phoenix and Sacramento. I returned to the Midwest for law school, attending Case Western Reserve University School of Law where I graduated cum laude. I am AV Rated by Martindale-Hubbell.

After shoveling one too many driveways in the Midwest, I packed up the day after graduation from law school and drove to Phoenix, where I have lived ever since. I began my legal career at Tiffany & Bosco, P.A., first as an associate and then as a partner. I then moved to The Law Offices of Scott David Stewart, PLLC. In 2012, I decided my clients would be better served if I opened my own firm. Partnering first with Amy and later Carrie were obvious choices to grow the firm. I love Phoenix, the desert and all the great outdoor activities Arizona has to offer. I am very active in the community and served on the Ahwatukee YMCA Board of Managers from 2013-2023 and National Charity League Ahwatukee Chapter Board from 2021-2023. I remain active in National Charity League and very much enjoy being able to give back through volunteer work.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
