Craig W. Penrod was born and raised in Arizona and has practiced criminal defense for over 30 years. Mr. Penrod is a member of the State Bar of Arizona, Maricopa County Bar Association, State of Nevada Bar Association, American Bar Association, American Trial Lawyers Association, Arizona Trial Lawyers Association, Nevada Trial Lawyers Association, Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Mr. Penrod is licensed to practice in state and federal courts in both Arizona and Nevada. Mr. Penrod is a member of the National College for DUI Defense conducted at Harvard Law School and has been certified by the State Bar of Arizona as a criminal law specialist. Mr. Penrod has also been appointed to the Criminal Law Advisory Commission of the State Bar of Arizona. Mr. Penrod is frequently consulted by the media as a legal expert on driving under the influence (DUI) and other vehicular crime-related issues and has appeared in the Arizona Republic and East Valley Tribune newspapers, as well as local television news. Mr. Penrod is AV® rated, the highest rating by Martindale-Hubbell, and is listed in the Bar Register of Pre-Eminent Lawyers which lists only those select lawyers and law firms that have earned an AV® rating and have been designated by their colleagues as preeminent in their field.
Mr. Penrod has been selected for inclusion in Super Lawyers Edition 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Only five percent of the lawyers in the state are named by Super Lawyers. The selections for Super Lawyers are made by Law & Politics, a division of Key Professional Media, Inc. of Minneapolis, Minn. Mr. Penrod and members of his firm participated as lead counsel in many of the cases involving consolidated facts in both breath and blood testing. Mr. Penrod is presently in the process of challenging blood draws which are conducted by non-medical personnel in non-medical settings, such as police stations or task forces. Mr. Penrod has served on committees assembled by the presiding judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court, as well as the presiding judge of the city of Mesa, to assist the courts in providing a defense prospective to handling of DUI cases in the courts in an efficient manner while still assuring that the defendants' rights are protected. Mr. Penrod testified as an expert witness in the hearing to assess attorneys fees against the government in the celebrated State v. Meza case in which the Arizona Court of Appeals, in an unprecedented move, ordered the state of Arizona to pay defense attorney fees as a result of misconduct by the Phoenix Crime Lab which was part of the litigation that resulted in the ultimate suppression of breath tests in over 1,600 cases in the Phoenix Municipal Court in the past few years.
Mr. Penrod is often retained by other attorneys to testify as an expert on DUI defense. Mr. Penrod has been retained to defend lawyers, doctors, CEOs of major corporations, professional athletes, airline pilots and police officers, as well as friends and relatives of judges and police officers.
