RICHARD M. YETWIN is a Shareholder in the Firm's Tucson office and has been an attorney since 1972. His current practice covers a broad range of civil matters with emphasis in corporate and real estate transactional work, and limited school law issues, although in the past he has been actively involved in litigation. Mr. Yetwin has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry/Biology from Tufts University and received his Juris Doctorate Degree from Boston University in 1971 where he served as an editor of the Law Review. He is a Certified Specialist in real estate transactions, having been qualified by the State Bar of Arizona, and has handled complex real estate and financing transactions including the buying and selling of hotels and resorts, motels, condominiums, apartments, shopping centers, acreage and school sites. During the 1970's, Mr. Yetwin participated in the resolution of numerous school law matters, including desegregation litigation (in the Tucson Unified and Phoenix Union High School cases with his then partner, J. William Brammer, Jr.) and civil rights litigation. He currently handles desegregation/Office for Civil Rights matters on behalf of several school district clients. Mr. Yetwin was one of the first attorneys in the state to participate in due process hearings concerning children with disabilities on behalf of school districts and has handled litigation concerning disabled children in both the Superior Court of the State of Arizona and the Federal Courts. He has served as the President and a Member of the Board for the Beacon Foundation for the Mentally Retarded, and of Catalina Foothills Estates No. 10. He has served on the Board of United Way and as the Vice President and on the Board of the Jewish Community Center in Tucson. How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
