Camarillo Estate Planning Lawyer

Overview

A major part of estate planning is determining the needs and concerns of clients, even when they cannot clearly state their goals. I have over 40 years of experience in guiding clients through the intricacies of family and estate planning issues. This experience helps to reduce the client's level of anxiety, and helps them better understand the processes, whether in creating a plan or dealing with the loss of a loved one.

The shape of the modern American family has changed, and I have seen an increase in the number of cases of estrangement and separation between family members. It is necessary for clients to have open dialogue with their attorney, and for that to happen, there must be a level of comfort and trust. My promise to our clients: to provide an atmosphere of concern and understanding along with professional competence.

I was born and raised in Ventura County (4th generation), and attended local schools, including Camarillo High School, so some people still remember me as Terry Murphy. Ron McConville and I have been married for 45 years, and we have four children and eight grandchildren. One of our grandchildren has special needs, so I have a personal connection with families looking to establish special needs trusts.

I love living and working in Camarillo and am proud to have served the community as follows: Camarillo Hospice - Board of Directors (9 years); Camarillo Health Care District - Advisory Board Member (several years); Camarillo Boys and Girls Club - Annual Auction Committee Chairperson (15 years); Miracle League of Camarillo - Board Member (3 years); Camarillo Chamber of Commerce - sponsor of Public Servant of the Year award (3 years).

Additionally, I was an American Field Service Returnee and Volunteer (exchange student to Germany 66-67), which ignited my life-long love of travel.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
