Overview
Lynda T. Bui is a partner in Shulman Bastian Friedman Bui & O'Dea LLP's bankruptcy department, working in both the Orange County and Riverside offices. Ms. Bui is also a U.S. Bankruptcy Trustee in the Central District of California, having been appointed by the U.S. Trustee in 2010. Her notable appointments (both Chapter 11 and Chapter 7) include In re Robert Manufacturing Co., In re Metropolitan Automotive Warehouse, In re Cosmedx Science, and in re Banner Mattress, all of which she has successfully and expeditiously administered. As a fiduciary, she has analyzed and administered tens of thousands of cases, both simple and complex, and has distributed hundreds of millions of dollars to creditors. She has also successfully represented other trustees in achieving similar results. Ms. Bui's other fiduciary duties include serving as chief wind-down officer, examiner, and receiver. In her capacity as an attorney, Ms. Bui focuses on all aspects of bankruptcy, including representing trustees, debtors, creditors, and parties in adversary proceedings. She represents clients—both companies and individuals—across a variety of industries including real estate, retail, manufacturing, banking, food services, nonprofit, and professional services. Ms. Bui also practices in state court with a focus on fraudulent transfer litigation and commercial debt collection, and has served as an expert witness on bankruptcy-related issues.
Ms. Bui graduated with a B.A. in Psychology with an emphasis in Asian American Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1994. While at UCLA, she actively participated in and held leadership positions in various student organizations, including the Asian Pacific Coalition and Vietnamese Student Association. She also served as a staff writer and business manager for Pacific Ties Newsmagazine, a quarterly Asian Pacific Islander publication at UCLA. Ms. Bui studied abroad at la Universidad de Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico.
Before entering law school, Ms. Bui volunteered at nonprofit organizations including Asia Watch and SOS Boat People in Washington, D.C. She earned her J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1998. While at Loyola, Ms. Bui was awarded a scholarship from the Southern California Chinese Lawyers' Association, wrote for Loyola Lawyer Magazine, and served on the Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Review.
Effective October 1, 2025, Ms. Bui will begin her term as President-Elect of the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees (NABT), which has approximately 1,000 members nationally and is the voice of the trustee and fiduciary community. She previously served as Vice President and Secretary of NABT. Concurrently, she serves on the board of the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce, having recently completed a three-year term with the Vietnamese American Bar Association, Southern California. She also recently completed her service on the 2020 Small Business Reorganization (Subchapter V of Chapter 11) Task Force headed by Chief Bankruptcy Judge Maureen A. Tighe of the Central District of California. Ms. Bui previously served a three-year term (2010-2013) as a director on the Orange County Bar Association and was president of the Orange County Asian American Bar Association from 2008-2009. She has also served as a board member on the California Bankruptcy Forum, co-chaired the Program Book for its Annual Conference, and served as Regional Governor for the Southern California Region for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. Ms. Bui is also a member of the Orange County Bankruptcy Forum, the Inland Empire Bankruptcy Forum, the International Women's Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation, the South Orange County Chamber of Commerce, and the Orange County Asian American Bar Association.
Through the years, Ms. Bui has volunteered her time with pro bono legal clinics including Law Day (a free legal clinic for Chinese-speaking and Vietnamese-speaking communities) and has spoken at seminars on the fundamentals of bankruptcy and various insolvency issues. Ms. Bui published an article entitled "Fraudulent Transfer: Litigation Under the Bankruptcy Code and State Law" in the California Bankruptcy Journal in February 2008. The article has been cited by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in In re JTS Corporation, 2010 WL 3122867
