I am president of a 325 unit HOA and our board was faced with a difficult homeowner lawsuit. Bill was extremely thorough in his explanations about the issues and kept us up to date as the suit progressed. His personable manner helped us through a difficult period and helped us reach a settlement without the risk of going to a trial.

I asked Bill Chapman to perform legal services for me. He did so efficiently, with little involvement on my part, and quickly. Bill is a very experienced, careful, and diligent lawyer who does his homework and presents the facts and argument in a hard-hitting fashion, but conscious of the many nuances and pitfalls in the law. He is very reasonable to work with and catches on quickly to the specifics of the industry of the client he is working for. If I have litigation in the future, I would like to have Bill on my side representing me and my business.

William D. Chapman was tireless in assisting me through a highly emotional and tricky business matter. I was impressed with his strategic council and overall knowledge of case law & precedent without having researched the matter beforehand. In addition to the unparalleled legal representation I received, Mr. Chapman was very sensitive to the emotional toll the matter was taking on me and handled this with a personal touch you wont find anywhere else. Perhaps his greatest attribute is his undeviating personal and professional integrity.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
