Attorney Information

Overview

Mr. Hawkins attended California State College at Los Angeles (B.S., with Distinction, 1963); University of Southern California (Master’s Program in School of Public Administration); Standard Designated Subjects Teaching Credential (Life); University of California at Los Angeles School of Law (Juris Doctor, 1969). Recipient, American Jurisprudence Awards in Evidence, Control of Crime and Justice and the Legal Profession.

From 1961 to 1969, Mr. Hawkins was employed, as a deputy sheriff in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, spending three years as a patrol and traffic accident investigation deputy and six years as an administrative sergeant, with supervisorial responsibilities in the administration of the Department’s contract law enforcement program, reporting directly to one of the Department’s Division Chiefs and Sheriff.

After graduating from UCLA School of Law, he was employed by Los Angeles County’s oldest law firm, where he practiced civil litigation, representing both defendants and plaintiffs, for 17 years, eventually heading the firm’s Admiralty Law Department and became one of the firm’s managing partners. He was one of the founding partners of Hawkins, Schnabel, Lindahl & Beck and, 15 years later, Hawkins, Prata & Daley – both boutique civil litigation firms -- where he represented both plaintiffs and defendants, in State and Federal Court litigated disputes, in California and other states, including Admiralty and Maritime, Personal Injury, Products Liability, Premises Liability, First and Third Party Insurance, Probate, Professional Negligence, Environmental, Consumer Protection and Commercial Litigation disputes. He served seven years as Of Counsel to Long Beach’s oldest law firm and, more recently, Of Counsel to Russell, Mirkovich & Morrow.

Mr. Hawkins has been a Private Mediator since 1995 and Panel Arbitrator for the Long Beach Bar Association for over 10 years. His trial and litigation experience, in California and other states, for both plaintiffs and defendants, has been an asset in advising civil litigation matters and in mediation, where he clearly explains what litigants – on both side of the aisle – can expect in trial versus mediation, i.e., background and experience important to most attorneys and their litigating clients as they seek a negotiated resolution of their differences to retain control of the outcome, instead of the risks of trial.

Mr. Hawkins is admitted to practice before all California State Courts; the District Courts for the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Central Districts; U.S. Court of Appeal - Federal Circuit; and the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the Long Beach Bar Association; Maritime Law Association of the United States (Proctor in Admiralty for Life); Federal Bar Association (Pending); and International Association of Defense Counsel (Member of Energy and Maritime Law, Transportation, Business Litigation, Alternate Dispute Resolution, and Products Liability Committees).

Mr. Hawkins is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell.

Your Profile?  Update Now

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
