Hired Attorney 2024We hired another attorney from Mr Ackerman's firm to represent us (a family) in a suit against a large corporation. When that attorney took paternity leave Mr Ackerman and his team took over representing us. They were barely communicative at all. When I appeared at the courthouse for jury duty I requested the court provide us with all documents related to the case. One of those documents appeared to be missing a page. After more than a week of trying to reach Mr Ackerman's team about it, I finally got to speak w Mr Ackerman by phone to ask him if the missing page was an error or if perhaps it had been filed separately. Instead of answering my question Mr Ackerman began to lecture me about "calling me about every single document I file" (even though I had never contacted him about such a thing before) and worked himself into frenzy, barely allowing me to speak. He told me that he thought we should end our working relationship. Yes. You read all of that right. My wife and I never treated Mr Ackerman with anything but the utmost professionalism and respect. I asked one (1) question and he blew up, leaving us in an even worse position than we were before we hired him...without representation in the middle of a case against a massive corporate landlord...in the middle of the holidays. Merry Christmas.

Hired Attorney 2018-2020Whitney Ackerman was my attorney for almost 2 1/2 years. He took my personal injury case on consignment and failed to do due diligence in the Discovery process. He didn’t honor our contract, he didn’t hire a medical professional or complete depositions of people essential to my case. He lied to me. His behavior was irrational at times and unprofessional, unethical, deceptive, incompetent, and disorganized. He pushed out my trial date twice. Then, he bought an expensive house and 3 weeks later sent me an email saying he had to withdraw because he didn’t have the money to continue my case. He had to file to withdraw 3 times because he kept filling out the form wrong, and actually perjured himself. He also refused to give me an itemized statement of costs. He gives the legal profession a black eye.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
