Overview
Therese is a native of Sacramento and graduate of St. Francis High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Upon graduation, Therese left to study for a summer in Montpellier, France at the Université Paul-Valéry. She loved France so much she then moved to Paris and found a position as an Au Pair for the next 9 months.
Upon returning to California, Therese moved to San Francisco and worked in marketing and advertising for a few years. After volunteering for the Support Network for Battered Women, she decided that the law was what interested her and went to law school. She graduated from Santa Clara University Law School. While there, she made law review, was a member of a law honor society, received recognition for her public interest work and graduated as a Public Interest Law Scholar, as well as worked at two off-campus law clinics in East San Jose and Santa Clara. Her law review faculty advisor is a leading authority on family law and was an inspiration on Therese's desire to practice family law. Therese has been a member of the California State Bar since 1997.
After graduating from Santa Clara Law School, Therese has worked exclusively in family law. She worked in San Jose for several years before moving back home to Sacramento. She originally joined Bartholomew & Wasznicky in 1999 and has recently returned to practice family law with Bartholomew & Wasznicky. She was assistant editor of the Sacramento Family Law Counselor newsletter for three years. She has taught classes on family law for Fathers First and for the Learning Exchange. She was a mentor for the Volunteers in Parole program. She is a member of the Family Law Section of both the Sacramento County Bar and California State Bar and is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
