Attorney Crystal Erlandson’s Background & Achievements
Crystal Erlandson, an associate attorney at Sevens Legal Criminal Lawyers in San Diego, is widely recognized for her skill in handling complex federal criminal cases, from white-collar crimes to high-stakes drug trafficking and immigration-related offenses. Her ability to navigate the intricacies of federal law has made her a force in the courtroom, securing favorable outcomes for her clients through meticulous case preparation and strategic litigation. With over 15 years of experience in criminal defense, Crystal has built a reputation for her unwavering commitment to justice and a client-centered approach that prioritizes fairness, transparency, and relentless advocacy.
Pursuing Justice With Passion and Purpose
Crystal Erlandson’s decision to pursue a career in criminal defense law was shaped by a pivotal moment during her undergraduate studies at University of Central Missouri. A professor—who had spent years as a prosecutor before becoming a judge—recognized her potential and encouraged her to apply to law school, believing she would excel as a defense attorney. That advice set her on a path dedicated to protecting the rights of individuals facing legal challenges. Crystal pursued her legal education with determination, excelling in her studies and honing the skills that would later define her career in criminal defense. Since earning her law degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law and passing the bar, Crystal has established herself as a formidable legal advocate, leveraging her extensive knowledge of the law to defend clients against serious state and federal charges in San Diego.

Most Notable Cases and Successful Outcomes
“Every case deserves a meticulous defense because the outcome can change a person’s life forever.” - Crystal Erlandson
Federal Charges Dismissed in Human Smuggling Case
A client of Crystal’s was arrested at the border after authorities discovered three undocumented individuals locked inside a hidden compartment in her vehicle. She maintained that she had been hired to transport currency from the U.S. into Mexico and had no knowledge of the hidden passengers. Despite facing serious federal charges, Crystal and her client rejected two plea offers of 60 days in custody and instead prepared the case for trial. A thorough review of text message communications between the client and her recruiter revealed critical evidence supporting her defense. Just days before trial, the prosecution dismissed all charges, ensuring the client’s freedom and clearing her of any wrongdoing.
Acquittal in a High-Stakes Drug Smuggling Case
Crystal Erlandson, alongside Sevens Legal attorney Ben Steigerwalt, represented a client who was arrested for importation of methamphetamine. Despite being released on bail, criminal charges were not filed until nearly two years later, at which point the client was serving in the National Guard and attending college in Tennessee. A felony conviction in California would have ended his military career and cost him his GI Bill benefits. Refusing to accept a plea deal, Crystal fought for her client through two trials. The first trial ended in a hung jury (10-2 in favor of guilt), and during the retrial, the jury returned an acquittal on all charges, allowing Will to continue his service and education.
Defense in High-Profile Securities Fraud Case
Early in her career, Crystal played a role in a years-long, high-profile securities fraud case, working alongside some of the most experienced federal criminal defense attorneys in the region. The case involved multiple defendants, with the government securing guilty pleas from nine individuals. However, the client represented by Crystal’s team was one of only two defendants who refused to plead guilty. After two trials, both ending in hung juries, the government ultimately dismissed the charges. This case reinforces the power of strategic litigation and unwavering advocacy.
Top Awards and Accolades
Crystal Erlandson has been recognized for her excellence in legal advocacy throughout her career. Early in law school, she earned the Witkin Award for Academic Excellence for achieving the highest grade in White Collar Crime, reflecting her strong foundation in complex legal matters. Since then, she has built an impressive track record in criminal defense, earning respect from colleagues, prosecutors, and judges alike.
Crystal is admitted to practice in all courts of the State of California and multiple federal jurisdictions, including the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Central, and Northern Districts of California. Her extensive qualifications and dedication to justice have solidified her reputation as a formidable criminal defense attorney in San Diego, representing clients in both state and federal courts.
