Overview

Summer is a civil rights and international human rights attorney whose practice at Schonbrun Seplow Harris Hoffman & Zeldes focuses on complex federal litigation, class actions, and impact cases involving constitutional law, consumer protection, and accountability for human rights abuses.

Before joining the firm, Summer advocated for asylum seekers, including African and LGBTQ clients, through the Southern California Immigration Project, and supported federal criminal defense matters involving national security and immigration issues. She also served as a judicial extern with the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.

Summer earned a J.D., magna cum laude, from California Western School of Law, with a concentration in International Law, where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the California Western International Law Journal and received the Distinguished Advocate Award.

In addition to litigation, Summer brings over a decade of international experience in human rights advocacy and storytelling. She consulted for the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda, managed civilian protection and advocacy projects in East and Central Africa and spent more than ten years as a producer creating commercials and documentaries in over 20 countries. This work includes producing a short documentary on the rule of law in Ukraine for the American Society of International Law. Summer is also a published author on sanctions evasion, genocide accountability, and truth and reconciliation processes, with work appearing in law journals and national writing competitions.

Summer is admitted to the California Bar and is committed to bridging rigorous legal advocacy with real-world impact in the pursuit of justice and human rights.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
