Attorney Information

Overview

Thomas Gorrill was born in Columbus, Ohio. The son of a military officer, he moved frequently. Tom lived in Ohio, Massachusetts, and Kansas before he began grade school in England. He also lived for several years in Florida and Texas before settling in San Diego in 1978.

Mr. Gorrill graduated from the California Western School of Law in 1981. Upon passing the California bar exam Tom worked as collections counsel for a San Diego corporation and was contract manager for a local software company. In 1984 he began working in private practice in areas of creditor and debtor rights as well as related civil litigation.

Tom’s first bankruptcy matters were consumer Chapter 7 and 13 cases for individuals and sole proprietors. Several years later he joined a larger firm and represented bankruptcy trustees and businesses in Chapter 11 reorganizations. He has been in solo practice for over 15 years.

Mr. Gorrill has tried numerous cases before the bankruptcy court in San Diego, most involving creditor objections to the debtor’s discharge or actions to determine whether a debt is dischargeable in bankruptcy. Few consumer bankruptcy lawyers accept litigation matters or take them to trial.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
