Overview

Asako Ejima immigrated to the U.S. from Japan when she was young and is proud to be an immigrant. Asako grew up in San Francisco, earned her Juris Doctor from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, and is licensed by the State Bar of Colorado. Asako practices immigration law exclusively.

Asako devoted her law school career to providing legal aid to immigrant and refugee communities in Northeast Ohio. During law school, she served as the Senior Editor on the Journal of International Law and the War Crimes Prosecution Newsletter and on the Executive Board of the law school's chapter of the National Lawyers Guild. Asako interned and clerked at various clinics and non-profits, including Case Western's Immigration and Human Rights Clinic, TESSA, a nonprofit in Colorado Springs that provides legal and social services to individuals who have experienced intimate partner violence and/or sexual assault, the Health and Human Trafficking Clinic at the Milton A. Kramer Law Clinic, and at Asian Services in Action Inc., a Cleveland nonprofit that provides wholistic legal services to Northeast Ohio's immigrant and refugee community.

Prior to her role as an attorney at the Law Office of Amie Miller, Asako practiced immigration law in Colorado Springs, CO with a focus on family- and humanitarian- based immigration. She is happy to be back home in San Francisco to serve the region's immigrant community and beyond.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
