Overview

Tom Robertson is an experienced real estate lawyer with extensive planning and development experience. In 1990 he founded San Francisco North Properties, Inc. (now SCI Office, LLC) and since then has handled its legal affairs and those of its subsidiaries. He has extensive experience in real estate development law forming special purpose entities and documenting private placements, including subscription agreements, offering memoranda, operating agreements, and obtaining project entitlements. He has developed projects in the City and County of San Francisco, Marin County, and the City of Santa Rosa, and placed two projects on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Rosenberg Department Store Building in downtown Santa Rosa which he tenanted with Barnes & Noble.

Most recently he formed a joint venture with IGH Partners, LLC to develop the 300 unit 425 Humboldt Apartment project in downtown Santa Rosa. He handled the project’s entitlements and permits, including all CEQA approvals. The design review application was filed on December 16, 2024, and the Zoning Administrator’s hearing and approval occurred on March 16, 2025, completing the entitlement process in 90 days.

Tom began his legal career at Brown & Wood, a Wall Street firm that represented Merrill Lynch, working on real estate syndications and as a litigator, moved on to Brobeck Phleger & Harrison in San Francisco, and then to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to gain trial experience. There he won the first case its West Coast Litigation Center tried on behalf of a charging party.

He and his wife will celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. They have a son who is a US Foreign Service Officer.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
