Simi Valley Probate Law Firm
Overview
I live and work in Simi Valley and have been practicing law for over fifteen years.
I love practicing law in Simi Valley and providing my community with personal, attentive, and experienced legal services, with integrity and effective advocacy.
In 2006 I started my own practice in Simi Valley, and my practice now serves all of Ventura County and parts of Los Angeles County. My practice primarily includes estate planning including the preparatin of trusts, wills, powers of attorneys, health care directives, etc. I also routinely represent clients in probate court when a loved one's estate must pass through probate. I also have extensive experience in business, real estate, and general civil litigation matters.
Prior to law school, I worked in the public service sector from 1987 to 1994, first in a local congressional office, and thereafter as community outreach coordinator for the City of Los Angeles, Environmental Affairs Department.
I graduated from Southwestern University, magna cum laude, in 1997.
In 1997, I joined the firm of Lynberg & Watkins in downtown Los Angeles. There, I worked on complex multimillion dollar environmental insurance litigation cases.
I wanted to work in my community of Ventura County and also serve the public interest and so in 1998, I joined the Ventura County District Attorney's office as a Deputy District Attorney, prosecuting a range of cases in which I gained valuable and substantial courtroom experience, including prosecuting a multitude of jury trials. As a Deputy District Attorney, I was called to prepare witness testimony and other evidence through which I sharpened my communication and advocacy abilities that have continued to serve me well even as I transitioned to civil practice in late 1999. From that time I have practiced in Simi Valley continually.
In late 1999, I joined the Law Offices of William J. Waters in Simi Valley. There, I worked independently on a range of civil cases including business litigation, real property, neighbor disputes, family law, bankruptcy, medical malpractice, and estate planning. I also conducted all of the firm's trials and also all cases that that went to the appellate court.
Educational Experiences:
- Prior to law school, I graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1987, with honors.
- While in Law School, I served on the school's Law Review.
- I was an oralist inSouthwestern's prestigious Moot Court program, competing for two years on the Environmental Law Moot Court Team at the competition held at Pace University, White Plains, New York. As an oralist, I argued complex legal issues competing against eighty other law schools, and winning First Place team in 1997.
- In addition to my role as an oral advocate, I also served as Chairperson of the Moot Court Board of Governors in 1996-1997 where I, with other members of the Board of Governors managed the entire Moot Court program, consisting of sixteen teams competing around the country. All of these unique and competitive law school experiences helped develop my strong and articulate oral and writing skills that have served me well in both trial and appellate advocacy.
Non-Legal Interests:
- I am married with three children. My hobbies include gardening, horseback riding, and camping. I am also involved with my church and am a volunteer with the Girl Scouts.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
